Explore the Jewel of the Hebrides

Barra may be small (you can drive around it in about 40 minutes), but it is packed with some of the most stunning scenery in Scotland. From white sands to medieval history, here are our top recommendations for your stay at No. 1 Ardveenish.

1. The Beaches

Barra is famous for its white sandy beaches and turquoise waters that rival the Caribbean.

  • Traigh Mhòr (The Airport Beach): Famous for the runway, but also a massive expanse of cockle shells and white sand at low tide.

  • Tangasdale Beach: Located near the Halaman Bay, this is perfect for sunsets and evening walks.

  • Vatersay: Connected to Barra by a causeway, the island of Vatersay is a must-visit. The "Twin Beaches" (Traigh a Bhaigh and Traigh Shiar) are often voted among the best in the world.

2. Kisimul Castle

The "Castle in the Sea." This medieval fortress sits on a rock in the middle of Castlebay. It is the historic seat of Clan MacNeil. You can take a small boat trip out to explore the castle walls and enjoy the view back towards the village.

3. Food & Drink

For a small island, Barra punches above its weight in culinary experiences.

  • Gàradh a’ Bhàgh a’ Tuath: Lunch and snack venue using locally grown produce.

  • Vatersay Hall: First class lunch location just beside one of the best beaches in the world.

  • Cafe Kisimul: Famous for its curry and scallop pakora. It sounds like an unusual mix, but this Indian-Italian fusion restaurant is legendary.

  • Heathbank Hotel: A great spot in Northbay for great tasting local seafood and a pint.

  • Ardmhor Cafe: Excellent coffee and cakes at the Eriskay ferry terminal.

  • Post Office: Great team scones and ice creams in the centre of Castlebay.

  • Barra Atlantic Gin: Visit the distillery to see how they use Carrageen seaweed to create their unique gin.

  • Airport Cafe: Award winning eats located inside the airport terminal.

4. Walking & Hiking

  • Heaval: The highest point on the island. It is a steep climb, but you are rewarded with a view of the Virgin and Child statue and a panoramic lookout over Castlebay and Vatersay.

  • Machair: For a gentler stroll, the machair (grassy plains) around the airport and the west side of the island come alive with wildflowers in the summer months.

After a day of exploring the beaches and hills, relax by the fire at No. 1 Ardveenish.
